Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 11) — The vice mayor of a town in Tawi-Tawi was killed Wednesday afternoon.
Fifty-three year old Vice Mayor Al-Rashid Mohammad Ali of Sapa Sapa was killed by an unknown assailant while onboard his Toyota Innova.
There were several others in the vehicle with Ali, among them a female passenger and security personnel. The Vice Mayor and the security personnel were the only ones shot.
Ali was brought to the Zamboanga Doctor's Hospital after sustaining three gunshot wounds to his chest, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Supt. Alan Nazarro, officer-in-charge of the Zamboanga City Police Office, told CNN Philippines Ali was on his way home when the incident occured.
A police report said as the Innova slowed down due to traffic along Governor Alvarez St., the shooter approached the vehicle and fired several times.
The suspect then ran to the other side of the road, boarded a motorcycle driven by another person, and sped away.
Nazarro said they have yet to establish a motive behind Ali's killing, and that an investigation was ongoing.
Ali was the latest local official killed in recent days.
Last week, Tanauan City Mayor Antonio Halili was killed during the flag raising ceremony at the Tanauan City Hall.
On July 3, a day after Halili's death, General Tinio, Nueva Ecija Mayor Ferdinand Bote was also shot dead. Two suspects in his killing have since been arrested.
Over the weekend, Vice Mayor Alex Lubigan of Trece Martires City, Cavite; Michael Magallanes, third councilor of Brgy. Sta. Catalina, Zamboanga City; and Nassif Palawan Bansil, municipal councilor of Kapatagan, Lanao del Sur were also killed
On Sunday, July 8, Philippine National Police chief Dir. Gen. Oscar Albayalde said there was nothing to worry about the series of killings of local officials, as these were not related to each other.
