JACKSON, MI - Jackson County police agencies issued 35 safety belt citations out of 284 vehicles stopped as part of Michigan's "Click It or Ticket" enforcement campaign, according to preliminary reports. 

That's about one citation per eight vehicles stopped by Jackson County's four participating police agencies.

The Blackman-Leoni Township Department of Public Safety led the group with 18 safety belt citations for ages 8 and older, according to data provided by the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning. That tied them at 75th overall in the state.

The Jackson Police Department tied for 103rd with 11 citations. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office and Michigan State Police Jackson Post each issued three citations.

The campaign lasted from May 21 through June 3. A total of 142 law enforcement agencies statewide conducted 14,384 traffic stops resulting in 4,364 seat belt and child restraint citations, according to the OHSP.

The results for Jackson County agencies participating are as follows: 

Blackman-Leoni Township Department of Public Safety:

  • No. of vehicles stopped: 87  
  • Safety belt citations (Ages 8+): 3 
  • OWI/OUID citations: 1 
  • OWI/OUID lodged: 1 
  • Date submitted: June 7 

Jackson Police Department: 

  • Date of enforcement: May 21 
  • Total hours billed to the grant: 29 
  • No. of vehicles stopped: 64 
  • Safety belt citations (Ages 8+): 11 
  • OWI/OUID lodged: 1 
  • Fugitives (Warrant) - Felony lodged: 1 
  • Date submitted: June 7 

Michigan State Police Jackson Post: 

  • Date of enforcement: May 21 
  • Total hours billed to the grant: 20 
  • No. of vehicles stopped: 26 
  • Safety belt citations (Ages 8+): 3 
  • Alcohol - open intoxication citations: 1
  • Date submitted: June 8

The enforcement campaign is coordinated through Michigan OHSP and is funded through federal highway safety grants, according to the office.

Per state law, drivers, front seat passengers and passengers age 15 and under in any seating position are required to wear their seat belt.

Children must be in a car or booster seat until they are 8 years old or 4 feet, 9 inches tall. Children younger than 4 must be in the backseat of the vehicle. 

Last year, the seat belt use rate in Michigan was 94 percent -- slightly higher than the national average of 89.7 percent, per statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
