Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Oscar Albayalde on Thursday said investigators are looking at politics behind the killing of Sapa-Sapa, Tawi-Tawi Vice Mayor Alrashid Mohammad Alih.
Interviewed on Unang Balita, Albayalde said according to the family, the victim is being "groomed" to run for mayor in next year's elections.
He said Alih's father is the incumbent mayor who is already on his third and last term.
"Walang makitang kadahilanan 'yung pamilya at kapulisan dito kundi politics. Yung tatay niya (Alih) incumbent mayor, third term na at mukang siya ang gino-groom [na pumalit]," Albayalde said.
Police Regional Office 9 director Chief Superintendent Billy Beltran said Alih, his wife and security escort were on board their vehicle on Governor Alvarez Street when a lone gunman shot him on Wednesday.
Alih was the second vice mayor killed in a week after Alex Lubigan of Trece Martires, Cavite, who was shot dead last Saturday.
Before the vice mayors' deaths, two mayors were killed in consecutive days last week: Tanauan City, Batangas Mayor Antonio Halili on July 2 and General Tinio, Nueva Ecija Mayor Ferdinand Bote on July 3.
