FOXBORO -- New England Patriots running back Rex Burkhead, who is currently on injured reserve, returned to the practice field this afternoon.
Burkhead was placed on injured reserve with a neck injury following a Week 3 loss to the Lions. This was the first day Burkhead was eligible to practice.
Due to a new NFL rule, players returning from injured reserve must miss eight games -- not eight weeks -- before returning to a game. Burkhead is not eligible to play until Week 13 versus the Vikings.
Burkhead must be moved to the active roster within 21 days.
With Burkhead returning, barring a setback, the Patriots should have quality depth in the backfield heading down the stretch. Sony Michel has missed two games with a knee injury, but should return soon.
Burkhead and rookie cornerback Duke Dawson are officially the team's two designated players for return from injured reserve. This means cornerback Eric Rowe and linebacker Ja'Whaun Bentley are done for the year.
Offensive tackle Trent Brown was absent for the second consecutive day. He missed yesterday's practice with an illness.
Offensive tackle Cole Croston was back on the field. He was cut earlier in the week, but has returned to the practice squad.
