The Vanity Fair party, which happens every year after the Oscars, is the showbiz event of the year.

To secure an invitation is to have secured your place at the heart of the Hollywood elite.

Only one half of the Piers Morgan/Susanna Reid double act – the pair who’ve shaken up breakfast programming with Good Morning Britain – has been, though.

Guess which one? Yes, it’s Piers, who’s now explaining why he felt so at home there, and why it’s in a different league from your average showbiz party.

‘It’s so exclusive that almost everybody there is a huge star, and they do genuinely relax.

'I remember walking through once and in the space of five minutes I’d seen Rupert Murdoch, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, and Buzz Aldrin, who landed on the Moon.

'Where else in the world would you see those people together? I ended up in a corner booth with Joan and Jackie Collins, who would sit in the same booth every year, and it was extraordinary.

'These two had been coming forever, and knew every big star in the room – they’d dated half of them.

'I just sat there as film star after film star came up and sat with them to chat, paying homage, basically.

    'It was riveting to watch.’

Piers likens getting an invite to the Vanity Fair bash to getting a Willy Wonka golden ticket.

The true goal, though, is to attend it, the Governors Ball and Elton John’s party (the holy trinity of hobnobbing) all on the same night.

    ‘They’re all slightly different.
